We finally figured a solution for now. Most of my time is taken up with taking care of my husband and mother who is 91 years old Jan. 7, so you can imagine how much of my time it takes to tend to their needs, but I do manage to work in some doll time as well. Here are two of my efforts that are farther along than these others you will see. I made another small version of my Izannah Walker reproduction doll that I bought from Kathy Patterson some years back. These copies are not true. They are smaller, made of cloth instead of composition heads, and while they resemble the doll, they look different than her doll does. The composition heads to me are not satisfying. The reproductions should be made of cloth as far as I am concerned. The other one is a large doll made using my own mold. She is pretty I think and I tried as I always do to give her the Izannah traits. Izannah's dolls hair varied with the dolls. Some were very dark, others had a sienna color mixed in the base of the curls. In the last several dolls I made, I painted the hair dark with the curls dark too, but will trend back to the more familiar side and neck curls with the lighter sienna color. What do you see when you look at early work that is just white and so far from finished? They look like aliens from space, but they also have character already in their faces. Harkness is the boy on the left, another large mold in the middle and another little Izannah on the right. The eyes are wonky and shoulders not quite perfect, but I stopped trying to correct these things to much. Our black Izannah is having her final stockinet put on and I always enjoy working on these. That face is so sweet to me. See the legs and feet, I had to make many corrections to get this foot, and I found out how to put the curve in the middle of the foot underneath, it was an accident. I had to go bac

k and sew the foot together and had to sew farther up on the outside of the foot and low and behold, I had that curve you see in Izannah's feet. Renovating houses takes up alot of time, but I have managed to finish one doll and have several smaller ones in the works. This doll is about 20 inches tall with a pressed cloth head, stitched hands and booted feet. It seems like it took a hundred forevers to finish her and glad I am to be done. There are alot of things that complicate and slow down doll making, but you just have to do the necessary and get back to the doll making as much as you can, allowing for time and the energy to do justice to the dolls. When you are to tired to work on the dolls, I say don't, because you will end up doing the work over again. Earlier this year I happened up on some yardage of the hard to find over dyed green calico fabric. For a long time on ebay I would see it in small pieces, and they were expensive too, so I spent some of my money from selling some dolls, and got as much of this fabric as I could. You notice I said selling some dolls, this is because it took several to buy supplies, namely two different patterns of the green over dyed fabric. Buying the antique fabric causes some hard decision making, because it is super expensive, it can be unusable when you get it, or you might not be able to get your money back on the dresses, or, you love it to much to be willing to give it away on dresses for your dolls, and plan to save it for the antique dolls only. I have made lots of dolls using antique fabric and only rarely regretted it, because sometimes the fabric is so old, it will have a smell that you cannot wash out. On the other hand, if you expect to get more money from the dolls, people expect to get antique fabric. Always a quandary over using new reproduction cloth, ( no problems there ) or the old cloth which might or might not cause problems. Tough call sometimes. Clima has two pettycoats, one plain cotton and a second one of vintage lace made very full, just because I love to give the dolls these slips. Hope you enjoy seeing her.
These are an effort to make some dolls that are like the antique black Izannah Walker doll that was once owned by Richard Wright. These dolls are super rare and I have only seen the one from pictures. If any others are out there, they are certainly not being shown and must be owned by private collectors. My dolls are about 20 inches tall and are pressed cloth head dolls, made in the same way as the antique ones are made by pressing fabric and glue into a mold. They have on their under ware so far as I have not decided about the dress fabric. I had picked out a wonderful blue that was slightly purple, but did not have enough to make two dresses, so I will have to go back and re think the fabric. Israel has a longer face than Venus partly because her head was glued together while Israel's head was sewed together. This caused a lot of tugging and pulling trying to get the thread through the head. She also had a slightly misshapen head too. I like the dolls equally and am not surprised they are a lot different, only sharing the same core features. I imagine there are more antique Izannah Walker black dolls in existence, I just wish they would make some pictures of them. Mor
She is a sweet doll and has a wonderful dress and bonnet made of antique calico fabric. She has shoes that slip on and are only made of faux leather, because I am learning to make shoes, but she is a hard size foot to fit, so these do fit her and look pretty too. Another doll I am showing has not been named yet, but she is another doll from the same mold as Claudia. She looks different, but they usually do. She is about 20 or so inches tall and has bare feet. She has no dress or bonnet as of yet, but I have been holding fabrics up to her and I think the antique Indigo blue and yellow designs is the best for her. She is sweet and probably looks more like the traditional Izannah doll than these other two. Last is my attempt to make the illusive black Izannah Walker doll owned at one time by Richard Wright. You cannot find pictures of any other black dolls made by the Walker family, I say this because it has been said that Jane Walker made the black dolls in the family, but I don't know if anyone really knows. I am naming this doll Venus because she is so beautiful to me. She has wonderful rust colored hair made of lambskin. She is about 20 inches tall too, although she is not as heavy in the body. Looking at fabric for her is harder because she could wear so many things, but I want her to have a pretty antique Calico dress just the right color. Lots of dolls I made last year did not get put on here, but I will post them here because this is a good place to keep them. Keeping track of the dolls I made and what they looked like shouldn't be a problem, but I just cannot keep up with them to put real pictures in a book. Hope you enjoy seeing these new dolls.
She is about 21 inches tall. She has a pressed cloth head and all the features of the antique dolls. This doll is being made for someone, and I hope she will like her. The fabric in this post is for her dress and bonnet. It is very expensive antique calico and is such a wonderful color too. Claudia was made using a photograph of an antique Izannah Walker doll that I really love. I have a plaster mold to make other dolls like her and hope to produce some more. The second doll I am showing is also an Izannah Walker Style doll made of cloth with all the antique doll features, such as pressed cloth head, second skin of cotton, stitched fingers and applied thumbs and painted boots. The second doll has painted boots as you see. I am still debating about dress color, but am leaning to a white calico. I do like both these dolls, but intend to make many more of the Claudia style dolls, as they represent to me the almost alien head the real Izannah's have. I have also worked on Sadica alot and she is soon to get her first oil painting. We recently went on a trip to the mountains and I hoped to see some hand crafted things, but it has all turned to things, made in china practically and was of no interest to me. I ended up buying a bucket of river rocks to bring home for $10.00 and a vintage paint brush ( old style with wide thick metal holder for the bristles. that was neat and I might try my hand at making a head on the old handle like I have seen people do in magazines. The food was good and we visited the aquarium which was very nice too. My husband got me to go up in the chair lift to the top of the mountain which was very creepy, as I am afraid of heights, but the view of the mountains was very pretty, made me want to paint them. I am glad we have the internet to see other folks hand made items, until such time as I can make some trips to see special things of interest to me as a doll lover. Sadica will get to make another appearane soon when she can show off her new face and maybe a dress too.
My name is Sadica. My story tells the tell of why my head should have come out of the mold, strong, beautiful and nicely formed, but as my name suggest, that didn't happen to me. Let me begin at the beginning and let you know that the person responsible for this tragedy is Martha ( the person who is making me ). Martha is kind hearted, hard working, and is usually careful about waiting for the right time to do each step to create me, so I don't totally understand this flub up. This can't be blamed on ( not knowing what to do ) Martha knows what to do, but sometimes I have observed, stupidity gets in the way. She isn't the brightest light bulb in the lamp, but certainly has a passing intellect. My only hope is her fierce desire to fix her mistake ( that's me ), and not only to fix me, but to make it up to me by making me extra beautiful, extra sweet and having the best clothes of all the other dolls that she didn't practically ruin from the get go. Do I sound a little peeved? Well, wouldn't you, if somebody pulled your still damp head out of the mold to early and caused your head to warp, and be weak, causing you to look odd and not knowing if you would survive. Martha has taken my head in her hands and promised me that I will be restored to beauty, that I will be her special doll and have the finest dress, the finest under things and special shoes too. She lamented over her rash decision to pull me out of my mold to soon and has lovingly been working to sooth my face and fix my boo boo's. Because I see her self recrimination over my condition, I will also help her too. I will let her put a special dyed stockinet on my head, and special paint to make me older and mellow. Oh, and she messed up the other doll on this post too, and I supposed she will fix her up as well. I guess it will be alright to let the other doll have a few goodies too, since she got pulled out wet as well. I have to rest now, get ready for another fix up session. When I am restored to beauty, I will write again and maybe my name will not be Sadica, but Gladica.
She is the second doll like Vestal I have made. She is not an exact replica of the first doll, but rarely do they look just alike. She has Vestal's head mold and shares features with her, but this doll has her own look and personality. She will have the same outfit that the first Vestal had. I have made several other dolls too and will show them to you. All of these dolls are fair size and some have the special Izannah bare feet and others the standard boots. If you have made dolls from molds then you know that when the dolls come out of the cloth mold, they do certain things that make them different. they warp, they develop air bubbles, the mold changes do to cleaning or sanding between making doll heads, so when you get a doll, either antique or new, these are the reasons your doll is unique. It is hand made and subject to many problems and also the painters hand on any given day. A few brush strokes make a huge difference in how the doll will look. I have learned no amount of experience will ever make me be able to duplicate exactly an original doll, not antique or new, so each doll becomes what she and you ultimately create together. The clothes are a little different. Color and fabric choices do make a big difference in your dolls final look. Hope you enjoy seeing these dolls in the making.

We had a gas fireplace soot up the house and we had to clean out the house and re- paint all the rooms, so we decided to re model too. along with this, my mother decided to live with us after her husband died, so we had to expand her room to include a bathroom, so that has taken alot of time and money. We are down to the kitchen and are repairing the floor now and will be laying a new heavy vinyl floor. I made a few pictures of our progress in the kitchen. It might be hard to tell what is going on, but you can see a little of what we have done so far. You might say, well why has it taken you so long to just finish the inside of the house, because we still have the outside to go, but building on a new bathroom, doing all the work yourself and all the work on the entire house yourself, and trying to look after mama and my husband who have medical issues, plus tending to her house, ( just takes time ). We added a new walk in bath tub in the big bathroom, and as you will see in the pictures, mama has a single person step in jet tub. It is the cutest thing. She also got her own washer and dryer. We tried to make her room a grand retreat as she spends alot of time in her room here at her house and she will want to do that at my house too, I am sure. The kitchen is pretty big, but it will shrink down when everything is added, such as cabinets, table and a hutch. I wanted to go more modern through out the house, but it hasn't worked out that way. The kitchen is the only room that will be more modern looking and I will post pictures of all the rooms when we get ready to move back over. I am not a horder, but after doll collecting for 30 years, and now making dolls, I have alot of dolls and supplies. Could I down size, probably, atleast some, but when I think I want to do that, I ask myself if I want to part with some of the dolls, or if it is the smart thing to try to sell off dolls, as I might not get a good price for them, and as for as making the dolls, I love to do it and it is a happy place for me to retreat to, after doing all the other chores. Being a Libra, making a decision is extra hard. Here are a few remodel pictures.
This mold was made about two years ago, but for some reason it didn't turn out right, but I tried again and I didn't have any problems and the head was in good proportion. It is funny that it takes a long time sometimes to think of and make a special project. I was making this doll and I thought to myself, why not make a limited edition doll. I was able to buy a piece of antique fabric which was over 7 yards long to make the identical dresses for each doll. I figure I can make at least 10 to 12 dolls with that much to work with, so my doll would be limited to 10 or 12. If I make the patterns to fit this doll, which I call my model, it won't be as hard to make so many. I hope to make the special bare feet on these dolls, as well as the stitching around the top of the head and around the neck where the head would be sewn on. We will see how this turns out. Along with the primitive doll, I have been making a few other dolls too. Margeurite, who I named after the wife of the Scarlet Pimpernel, a good show I like, is very pretty and a large doll. She has ringlets on the sides of her head and around her neck. I must pick something super pretty for her to wear. Another doll I am making is Sylvester, a boy who I named after Sylvester Stallone, I like him too. I think Sylvester would like to have a black calico suit with a fine white shirt and bow tie. We will see about that too. All in all I have 6 large dolls to make, plus my limited edition ( 10 to 12 ) plus 4 tiny Iz dolls to finish, and this is not counting the sheet rock sanding and painting the kitchen that I have to do as well. I better eat alot of turnip greens tonight for supper to strengthen me up, HaHa I hope every one is well and busy with their special projects a
This large pressed cloth head doll is finally finished. She caused me quite alot of trouble along the way, but we have come to terms with one another. I always try to find a piece of cloth that really suits each doll. This cranberry antique calico fabric has been laid aside for probably a year or more, as I have been busy spending what little money I have on buying as much antique fabric as I can, and now it has been made into a fine dress for Bloomette. It took all that I had to make the outfit. I did make her a lace slip as well as a cotton one to fill out her skirt. These type slips are not what a doll of that era would wear, but, I like the frills, so she got it anyway. The bonnet was almost changed to a simple more appropriate one, but I spent forever making it and just couldn't change it, even if it is a little over the top ( fancy wise ). Besides finishing this doll I have been trying to dye fabric again. I always look out for the ( poison ) green overdyed calico fabric. It is super hard to find and super expensive too. Usually you can get little pieces, but not enough to make a large outfit, so I have been trying to dye a very old farm dress that was a faded green into a over dyed poison green color. The over dyed green calico got to be that special color by first dyeing the fabric a indigo blue, and then over dyeing it with a special yellow, I can't spell that color right now, but it is a color I think you would have to buy special. Eventually I will get the colors and try this. My attempts have been a big failure as the color I got is ugly and not worthy of a dress, even though it is an antique dress. I will attempt to dye it one more time a brighter green and use it to make tiny doll dresses. I have also learned another valuable lesson on buying antique clothes. When you see an old dress or piece of fabric try to see if it has lots of age stains, because you will not be able to get them out of the fabric. To my dismay, I learned this the hard way and have wasted money and time. You can get out a few stains, and even not get out a few stains, which would be acceptable, but if the fabric is very bad, then don't invest in it, better to pay more money and get a good piece that you can use all of it. Aren't you glad I share all my mistakes, so you don't have to go through my trouble. Happy Doll making to all.
About two months ago, a fellow doll club member and friend died suddenly. She was so friendly, generous and kind. She loved dolls and had a huge number of them of all kinds. She left instructions that on her death each member of the doll club could have a few of her dolls. This past week the members went to her house and we selected a few dolls each that we liked and I took the two dolls she had that I made, along with a few other of her dolls. The larger doll with the somber face and hardly any color was a doll I sold to my friend at the doll show in Meridian, Ms. 5 years ago, and the second small doll I made for the same lady a year later. I had forgotten exactly what they looked like, so it was a surprise to me to look back and see what I had made. I never expected anything like this
to happen, but I know that life takes sharp turns suddenly and we can never be prepared for the good or the bad. I appreciated my friends thoughtfulness and generous nature, but feel so sad she is gone. Seeing the dolls now that I made pretty early, just learning how to make them, and being a beginner at sewing, I feel pretty good about them. I always tried to make everything good, neat, and painted the best I was able. I used to say that when I finished a painting for sell, it might not be a good painting, but it was painted good. It is the same now with the dolls. I also see that I have lost some of the freshness and primitiveness that I used to have. That might be because I have learned how to make a better dress and possibly have learned how to make the heads shapes better, but what ever the reason, I see some of what I love about the cloth dolls is missing in the newer ones. Each of us evolves in what ever we do. I have changed in style many times and probably will roll around again to the more primitive in painting and doll making. I hope you enjoy a look back at the older dolls and seeing the new ones too. Marion underwent a face lift recently and was rewarded with a new beautiful dress of antique blue calico. I want to put her picture here too, so that she can show off her new dress.Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07165693001910322264noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3344844724048803624.post-61509141450928904592018-02-01T17:34:00.001-08:002018-02-02T22:11:39.438-08:00 Finished DollsHere are two finished dolls I have spent quite alot of time on. I made a large Ella Smith ( Alabama Baby Doll ) and a Izannah Walker Style Cloth doll. Both of these dolls have cloth heads and bodies. The alabama doll has a cloth head with a pressed mold face made from my antique doll's face and the Izannah doll has a pressed cloth head also made in a mold. The very early black Alabama dolls are hard to find and buy, also super expensive, so I have made some here and there, this is the largest one I have made so far. Due to paint issues and not having much time to work on the dolls, I don't have many dolls to show today, but I have made atleast three other Izannah dolls that have to sit up for atleast a month for drying and then clothes making, so hopefully in a month or so, I will have some more dolls. Going into the spring and summer, I thought I would try my hand at making a Philadelphia doll, as I now have one to make a mold of, and I would like to make some little black dolls, made in the way of the Izannahs, but just little simple black babies. Another project to do is to make molds of my large Izannah dolls that are about 29 inches tall. I had molds, but I re worked them and now have to make new molds. I am looking forward to seeing other dolls people are making and continuing enjoying my doll making days.
The Black Beecher Type Doll is one of my favorite dolls as is the Philadelphia doll. Normally I couldn't afford them, but these dolls were reduced enough that I went ahead and got them for possible reproduction later on. The Beecher is alot more complicated in her head construction. I don't know how they made the head, but I know a method I could make the head and then work on the padding in the face. The body is not complicated and I did see the doll is stuffed with a type of grass, which is tightly rolled and packed into the legs. I know this because this doll I bought had a leg that was almost torn in two, not from play, but with age and weak spot in the fabric I guess. I carefully pressed the leg back together and cut a piece of muslin, glued the fabric and then wrapped it around the bad leg. The wig cap is really neat being a piece of cloth with loose weaving that you can sew on the wool hair, weaving the wool in and out of the wig cap and then stitching it onto the head. I haven't looked at it yet to see what kind of hair you would need, but it is weaved, not a skin. The Philadelphia doll would be made like the Izannah dolls by making a plaster mold of the head, then making a cloth pressed head, sewn together and mounted onto the body. The body has three skins. I know this because the doll had a hole in her back and I had to repair this and could see the three layers of cloth, and that the doll is stuffed with saw dust. The inner layer of cloth is like a muslin and then it has a second layer of stretch type cloth, as the third layer has. I don't know what to use to make the body yet, but will have to research this, but it is a knit fabric. The arms and legs are fairly simple. I have to say the Philadelphia doll is wonderful in its size and compact design. The large head and smaller body are so cute and I just love this doll. My dolls are both very worn, but it doesn't affect their charm or take away from how wonderful they both are. The Black Beecher doll's dress and and shoes were dry rotted and shredding, so a replacement will be needed. The Philadelphia doll has a dress, but I don't think it is her original dress, however the shoes on this doll are still in fair shape. Here are a few pictures. I hope you enjoy seeing these old beauties. I had to shine the flash light on the beecher to make her show up.
Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07165693001910322264noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3344844724048803624.post-13261191706271958222017-12-25T20:19:00.000-08:002017-12-28T15:35:18.692-08:00 New Izannah's, an alabama baby doll. and an Old Fashion Rag DollFirst of all. let me wish everyone a wonderful safe New Year, full of happiness and hopefully, lots of doll making. Enjoying Christmas day at home, doing some cooking and working on my dolls, it was a good day. Any time I can just work on my dolls, without having to stop for other type work is a good day to me. What I am showing you is a few new dolls, plus my antique Izannah Walker doll named Harmonia. Harmonia is a patient doll, because not only did her previous owner fail to make her a good dress, I have not made her one either. She has on a old chemise hand me down from another doll. I do plan to fix her up with a good dress and hat. Along with Harmonia, is Gladiola and Bethsayda. I haven't put Harmonia to full use yet. I am only looking at her body and certain parts to make better parts for my dolls. ( more correct proportions ) I would have to draft a new pattern to get her form right ( the hour glass shape ) attaching the legs different from I have in the past, and also her hair. This antique doll has shorter legs than a lot of the antique dolls I have seen., also one foot is not the same size as the other one. I had already stopped trying to get everything perfect, because some small imperfections only add to the dolls charm in my opinion. ( also eliminates a lot of do-overs ). I have also decided to go ahead and re-do the tiny dolls waist on the blue calico dresses I had made them. I made the waist band to wide, causing the dress to be to long and not look right on the dolls, so after much careful deliberation and much putting off deciding to do the correction, I have started to fix the problem. I really should have written to Santa to bring me a stupid mistake preventer, and a new brain. Sadly, I couldn't remember to do this. Well, another project I have been working on is the very big, fat, black Alabama Baby Doll, I have made for a friend. At a scant 25 inches tall, this chunky girl is really very sweet. I deviated from the true body and put on a second skin, which the antiques don't have. I have to go back and tweek her out and paint on her eyebrows which are very distinctive and flaring. I just thought you might like to see her now. She is getting a black calico dress. My last item of interest here is the old fashioned painted head rag doll. I have lots of trouble with these, as they don't have the old antique look to me that seems so simple to make, but I do the best I can, and hopefully one of these days, I will stumble on a face that looks like I envision every time I try to make one of these dolls. I re painted my little Izannah dolls too. They didn't sell on ebay, so I guess they weren't decked out right. Enjoy the holidays and happy doll making to all.
I started these dolls atleast two years ago and laid them aside for months, picked them up and worked on them for awhile and put them aside many times. It is hard to say why some of the things we make just take a long time, no interest, busy, not working out, can't solve a particular problem on them, just any number of reasons to not finish something in a timely manner, but today, the little dolls are all dressed up and ready to look sweet for someone to enjoy. The last few years have been hard for making dolls, because of other work, but the desire to make them is as strong as ever, in fact, I have been thinking of making the tiny 5 to 6 inch dolls again, or atleast two or three of them. I had a recent setback on my new large Izannah dolls, which was the paint on the feet ( black oil on top of black acrylic paint ). this was really weird because I painted the feet in the regular way, except I did put on a coat of acrylic black over the gesso . ( nothing wrong there, and when that dried I painted the feet with black oil paint, there should have been no problem, but the paint would not dry. After a month, paint still rubbing off, I knew I was in trouble. Dreading the idea of starting over, because the feet are lots of labor to make, I put the feet under the warm water and began rubbing off the black paint. Oil does not react to water by just rubbing off. It should never just come off, so I am at a loss to know what happened. I got all the black off the feet down to the cloth and a few remnants of gesso and sanded. I will re gesso, and skip the acrylic and paint my old faithful Ivory black oil paint again. Sometimes it is better to just stick to what you know and to the paints you know are reliable. Mama bought some oil paint at the hobby lobby and that could have been my problem. Well, I have to go back to my big Alabama doll and see if I can get her done. Christmas is fast approaching and I hope everyone is enjoying the good days, good weather, and looking forward to the holiday.
These dolls were a huge task, and they are standing together now under a cover with sachets to make them smell good, until such time as I get a note from the magazine to send the dolls or they say no, and then I will be free to let the dolls go. While the brides stand silent soaking up the perfumed sachets, I have not been idle. I have made three more Izannah dolls, the normal size between 17 to 20 or so inches tall. They will be put together very soon, I have had to wait along time on the oil to dry, the black in the boots is for some reason, just taking forever to dry, but I have to be patient, as to do other wise will just cause more problems. Another project I am finishing is the little 9 inch Izannah dolls, 2 of them, which have been in the making for way to long, making them dresses that are a mixture of antique blue calico fabric. A friend of mine, awhile back wanted a very big Alabama doll, actually this was close to two years ago, but now I have gotten to the point of soon finishing this doll too. If you have never made a Alabama baby doll, you wouldn't know how much trouble it is to make one, which requires new patterns, new face mold, lots of tweeking, and that is if you have a doll to go by, but the doll is getting done, so I am glad to be nearing the end of this project. My house renovations are still going along pretty well and is much of the reason my doll making is so slow, but I am creeping along and am able to make a few things. I will post the new dolls soon. Hoping everyone will have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy their family and more doll making.
While there I bought a few items of interest. Usually we have never gone to the beach in season, but prefer to go when its cooler because we don't swim in the ocean, but mama went to her sisters, thus, we stayed near her in Panama City. If you love the night life, this is the place for you, if not, choose a quieter spot. The music goes all night long, the roller coaster goes all night long, along with every other ride and music and restaurant place there. We did go to the beach twice after 5 o'clock. We did go swimming in shallow water, and it was nice, and we took our two dogs too. The seafood was very good there, better than here at home, and so many people there as well. I can say I enjoyed the trip. My little spending spree is shown here. I got a grey bear made of lambskin. Beautiful curls, but the lady who made it had glued a pair of batenburg wings on his back. I should have looked better, but I came home and ripped the wings off as well as a few other glued on ornaments she put on. Such a shame to glue on things like this bear. Always better to stitch ( not glue ) on your cloth items. I got a brown mohair bear ( have to see how to clean it ) The pair of small raggety anns were sweet and are Gearge Averill according to their tag. they have dresses, but I stripped everything to be cleaned. They are vintage and different in the faces. I don't like yarn on dolls, but these called to me anyway. A great find is the indigo depression era farm dress. It was in a small estate store. Beautiful color and fabric is strong. I almost fell out when I saw it, as I never find things like this here in Meridian. As a birthday gift to myself, I bought the child size dresser. Mama had a dresser just like it ( only big people size ) it has the white design on the mirror just like the big ones and is in excellent shape. It was so cute, I just had to get it. It did come with a chest of drawers and a bed and stool, but they are plain, so I didn't photograph them. The dresser is 31 inches tall to the top of the mirror. Where will I put it ( Don't even know ) as house is full and more to put in there. HaHa The brown primitive bear is cute too. I have made some of these, but they had him set so he doesn't move his legs or arms and put cheese cloth bandages on him to make him more shabby or sad ( not sure which ), I thought he would inspire me to make some different type bears later on. I think the rag doll family is the last of the pictures. I paid to much for these for sure, but they were a family and had great clothes ( again removed to be washed ) and they appealed to me, even though they are only about 20 years old. The body, head shape and the hands are very simple and the hands and feet are not what I would make, so that is part of their charm for me, something different than I would do. We made a super big decision on this trip. ( No More trips in Hot weather ). Enjoy looking at the pictures and may be these things here will call to you to make something like them or inspire a totall
When I got started I had a full head of hair, but now, not so much. HaHa I felt like pulling all my hair out making this outfit. The fabric is a soft vintage cotton Hob nail lace netting, so beautiful, but it had to have a backing on everything. I used a white thin cotton organdy and it actually was pretty easy to sew, but the netting will stretch and it is super fragile ( not weak or rotten weak, but just delicate, as it is a very fine netting. I really don't even see how they make fabric like this. As is the usual case, you start out with a set plan on how the dress will look, but, as with lots of things, your plan begins to take on a life of its own and you don't end up with exactly what you envisioned. Lots of different types of a bride veil appealed to me, but I also thought, this dress could double for something else, even a very fancy everyday dress to a collector, so I stuck with the bonnet. Wedding Veils now are made of nylon or polyester, and unless you are a millionaire, or live in England where I think they still make cotton tulle lace or a similar lace, you will have to pay 40.00 a yard for the fine 100% cotton tulle lace netting. I debated about getting a yard of it, but, after these brides, when would I use the netting again, maybe never, and the Izannah dolls are probably better off with the bonnets because they tie onto the head, there is not any hair to pin a real veil onto. Brides during Izannah Walker's time period did wear lots of lace long veils though. There is alot of fun to be had making a dress with the decorations you want, twisting ribbons or cloth and stuffing the bows and sashes. Now that I have two brides finished, Merietta is waiting for her turn. She is young looking and will have more of a solid fabric dress and traditional type bonnet. I have been gone to Panama City for a few days and I was bad, as I bought lots of dolls, some fabric, chalk paint, books, two bears, and today, I went down to the flea market and bought a childs dresser set. It is about 30 inches tall to the top of the round mirror, and includes the bed and chest and stool. I just couldn't ( not get it ) even knowing there is no room to spare in the house, but I had to get it any way. I will post some of the things we did and some of the things I bought next. Thanks for visiting.
I have been searching for fabric to make two distinctive and different bride dresses for them, only to discover that nothing is available on line. the antique wedding dresses are to expensive and to fragile. The modern material is all made of polyester or nylon, or at the least a blend of cotton and something else Happily, I have been buying along for the last 2 years bits and pieces of vintage lace type fabric, Mostly a type of dotted lace fabric. I found 2 bags with a white and a ivory Hobnail lace netting fabric that I had forgotten about. PERFECT. Looking at old pictures of the brides of long ago, the dresses vary quite a bit. I noticed mostly they used fresh flowers for the head veil and their hand held flowers. Alot of the dresses for the brides were not with full skirts, but more simple straighter dresses which were decorated with lace and appear to have been home made. Another thing I noticed is that almost all the women and girls in the wedding photos also wore white, this is a little confusing , as you are not sure in some of the group photos who is the bride or if there are more than one bride there. In the first picture Agatha is on the left, but that changes in different pictures, She has a heavier fatter face. Merietta was a problem and I almost didn't finish her, but after going back many times, she bloomed out into a pretty girl. Almost everyone has a hard time getting a look they want for their dolls, but if you are patient and keep trying, usually you can get the doll to behave and become what you wanted. Our work on the house is continuing, and we are going down to Florida soon. I am looking forward to a new book I bought, going late in the afternoons to the beach, shopping, hopefully to find some good treasures in Panama City. It doesn't matter if I find anything or not, I just like to ramble and look. My mother is looking forward to staying with her sister there and on the way back we will stop in Pensacola, Fla to stay with my brother and do a few favorite things there before coming back home. the intense heat is calming down and it is still hot, but not the killing heat we have had. It is my intention to also make each girl and regular day dress, as somebody, might want to change her out of her wedding outfit sometime. that might change. I have considered trying to send these wedding dolls to a magazine to see if they want to put them in, as these dolls all dressed up in wedding clothes is something a little different and not anything like what I have seen. We will see. Happy doll making to everyone.
I have always loved seeing them and the doll's in the brides dresses too. Sometime in the past, I can't remember when the notion struck me to make an Izannah bride doll, but now I have made the first one. Well, you might say, Martha, you must love bows and ribbons, and yes I do. All the dresses the french doll makers have made using beautiful fabric, lace, and ribbons twisted in wonderful bows and decorations have made a great impression on me. My skills in making these things are pretty close to non existent, only my desire to have a fancy dress for my bride drives me to try making the best fancy dress I can, plus the purchase of a very early antique skirt of a real brides dress. The skirt is a sheer lawn fabric with stitched dots. I used the wide hem for the dress hem, as well as the sleeves made out of the hem too. Making the doll spanned about three months from beginning to end ( which included several paint overs ) and the dress and unders took three weeks ( including many do-overs ). I believe the best way to learn to sew and lots of other things is to just start and ( by trial and error ) you will begin to improve and be motivated to try more daring projects. If a professional dress maker was to examine my dress, she would be amazed that I was able to make it or even a good simple dress, due to my lack of schooling on sewing, but it is pretty and I am proud of it. Marion is the first bride, there is a second one, and a third one too, which I will be making the dresses for next. Why did I decide to make three brides? Well, Agatha seemed as though she should have a wedding dress too, and looking over at Merietta, I felt she shouldn't be left out on the fine dress of frilly white. Searching for special fabric for these dresses has been fun, but the antique wedding dresses are two expensive to use for cutters and just good old fabric suitable for a dress that would be appropriate for the time period is really hard to find. It will be fun to start the next dress, as it is of different fabrics and design. I will have to study some old pictures of wedding dresses and jump start my brain to make each doll a pretty original dress and bonnet or hat of some kind. I did notice in some of the pictures I have been looking at that brides tend to have a dress that they like, rather than what is strictly in style, so while keeping the fabrics to what they should be, style is pretty much up to the imagination. Wish me luck on the next creation.
If you have never attempted to make one of these dolls, you wouldn't understand the way the head is made by gathering the front section and sewing it to a back piece which is not gathered. A tricky process, because you will see by looking at the two dolls I am showing you, that the head may turn out totally different each time. It depends on how you gather and stuff the head. Everything looks like it is going to be good, and suddenly you see the head is stuffed to fat and short or to thin and tall, or in the case of one of my dolls, with big fat jaws, which to be fair is really cute on her. According to the book I have, later in the Adams sisters doll making, they were making or expected to make up to 1200 dolls a year. They had tested sewing among their friends to see who could sew the best and later the people who could sew the best were hired to help make and dress the dolls for sale. A newspaper article was written when the doll business was flourishing that said the Adams house was like a paradise to children. It was full of dolls and doll clothes of all sizes. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Emma Adams died suddenly on July 26, 1900 and her father wrote her obituary. Here is one part : With an artist's eye and touch, all combined with a magnetic personality, she was one whom to know enriched ones life. In her heart was always a great love for the little ones and an instinctive appreciation of child nature. I think she began making dolls for the children around her, that led to the doll business. Not much is said about how the business began, so I think it evolved from a hobby into the doll making to help the family. Another little item I will share with you is that I am a great John Wayne fan. I love to watch him in the movies, I bought a collectors magazine about him with great pictures and history. His name is really Marion Morrison, and while he is nicknamed the Duke, this was taken from his childhood dog who was named Duke. This brings me to why I bring him up, I made three Izannah dolls, while not completed, the heads are finished, just waiting for arms and legs on two of them, but one is , to me, beautiful, and I decided to name her Marion, because of John Wayne, because he is one of my favorite stars and I so admire how good he was, how good his character was in the movies, and I like to believe, his character was , in real life. The other two girls are pretty too. Agatha is not really pretty, but she is compelling and makes you search her face more. Making the Columbian dolls is another long adventure into making a great doll. I admire Emma and Marietta Adams, not just for the dolls, but because of their devotion to their parents, who certainly needed help in their old age. I named the third Izannah doll Marietta.
Most people don't comment or lament to much on their failures or troubles, but I think its good to share that every doll you make doesn't jump right off the work table onto the paint table onto the dress making table and be a fabulous beauty. I did make a pretty doll and have finished ( for the most part) , except to tweek her curls out a little more. I posted this doll on facebook. She is beautiful to me. I might have given up on getting the famous Izannah curls just exactly right and settle for pretty ones, but, getting the curls right is important if it can be done. I think people have ( blocks ) about things. things that for some reason are really hard for them to do. these curls shouldn't cause this much trouble, but as I said, there are things that a person can't seem to do, even though it should not be that hard. My post today is really about another doll I made. the doll is sweet, but not what you would think of as an Izannah Walker doll. Sweetness doesn't save her. Before I redo one, I try to figure out what can be done with the least amount of trouble, but most of the time, there is no easy solution. Considering it has already taken my husband about a week and a half to make the head, which was a good formed head, then making the body and stuffing it, then starting the painting process, which takes several weeks, and then to discover it isn't working out, so what to do? Can you change from a girl to a boy? Will that work? If no, then let really dry and sand and make a few changes to the head, restockinet and then start the painting over again. All this can be done if the changes will not add to much weight to the head. A light weight head in the cloth doll is super important to me. Choices are re do the work, or trash the doll and start over. I hate to waste time and effort and supplies, but ultimately, the finished doll is the most important thing. Oh, the problems doll makers face ( if they are me ) HaHa. Hope your doll making goes easier and you have great sucess ( most of the time ) as I am sure even the most dedicated and famous people had troubles along the way when making their creations. Here is a picture of my little troublemaker.
