New small black dolls

I made two small black dolls ( 11 1/2" tall ) for some sweet girls in Mississippi.  These are my first small black ones. They have  lambskin wigs, which are a thin, thin pelt less than 1/8" high. It was perfect for these little dolls. Luckily I happened to have a old vintage apron, as the girls wanted red dresses. The material is very faded, but I thought it was a good choice. I learned more about working with the pelts this time, as you only have so much natural edge. I had to cut close to the hair to try to get some fringe for the forehead. You really need a natural edge around there. It takes time to get the hang of this, but I'm learning. I hope the girls will like their dolls.

  2. These are sweet. I love their matching red dresses! Lambskin, that's the soft stuff with the ripples? used to make Russian hats? I bet that was difficult to work with.

  3. Thank you Sherri and Rhissanna, I had to work real hard on these two. I worked about a week on and off on the clothes. the hair is not hard to do, if you have the right pelt. If you don't have the right edges, it's hard to make it work. I got a little more experience working with the animal skin. I've got some big dolls coming up with lambskin pelts, so will see how they turn out in a few weeks. thank you both for your sweet comments.

  6. They're wonderful, Martha. Those will be some happy girls.

Where does one come by lamb pelts? We shop at a leather store here in San Antonio for Phil's leatherworking supplies...they might have something. :~)

  7. Thanks Jan. You can get lambskin pelts at www.chichesterinc.com Call them and they can help you get what you need. or Leatherwize on ebay or www.leatherwize.com I have had good luck getting good pelts from these people. You need to tell them you want the whole natural pelt so you get all the natural edges for your dolls forehead.
